I can answer this one! If: a) You believe someone is doomed to an eternity of suffering and hell because they don't know the true path; and b) You are a good person; Then: c) You will attempt to teach them the correct path. I also find that in some unfortunate cases it is just a matter of saying that "I am right and you are wrong". Think of it as theological masturbation. They get-off on talking *at you* (not with you) about their interpretations of religion. (Did I say "their interpretation of religion"? I meant "Truth"!) There are ways and means. If Christians are really following Christ then they would be following his example of proselytizing and going along with his prophecy: Matthew 24:14: " And this good news of the kingdom will be preached in all the inhabited earth for a witness to all the nations; and then the end will come." Also Romans 10:13-15 says: "For "everyone who calls on the name of Jehovah will be saved." However, how will they call on him in whom they have not put faith? How, in turn, will they put faith in him of whom they have not heard? How, in turn, will they hear without someone to preach? How, in turn, will they preach unless they have been sent forth? Just as it is written: "How comely are the feet of those who declare good news of good things!" Christians should be proselytizing to everyone, not just atheists. And there is no fiery torment for those that do not listen. Eternal Punishment is not a biblical teaching. It goes against the very nature of God to punish someone forever; if that happened He would not be a God of Justice which the bible clearly says He is.

If someone did something nice for you, you would want to do something nice back. Since Jesus paid for the sins of the world, including mine, why wouldn't I want to tell people about him, especially if I am concerned that they will spend an eternity away from him, living in regret and loneliness, if they don't come into relationship with him. Or, in simpler terms, if I know the bridge is out, would I sit there in my car and let people keep driving, saying "whatever you want is okay by me" as they sailed past? No, I would be out flagging them down and pleading with them to stop.

Basically, they do it, or are encouraged to, at least, because they are supposed to spread their faith. It's not just atheists, they are actually supposed to, much like Christ, preach to everybody. It's just what they are supposed to do. Realisticly, they may also be motivated by a sense of their own pansuperiority, or your infiriority as one completely without faith. Sadly, the second is the most common. Many Christians, especially those who are very fundamentalist or born again, look down on Atheists. Think about it, how often do you see Christians speaking about evils of Buddhism, compared to Atheism?

I think some truly want to help you because they believe and others just want to put you down. If they do it after you've asked them not to than to bother you.

because the joy they have they want to share with all. cant call em selfish.

Because it soothes their frayed nerves? Because they want to have their beliefs and experiences confirmed in others because some part of them has doubts? I have no idea, but I've heard every reason and excuse there is from these folks and the truth is that they are just annoying, nervous people who mistake being 100% spiritual for some kind of answer. Life is comprised of both the spiritual and the material and to deny either is to live only half a life. The annoying half.
