Because it's harder to track and catch them there. If you were fleeing capture, would you run to an open field or the most mountainous area possible?

Its a good hiding place,were you the first one caught when you played hide and seek when you were a kid?

For the same reason that the the Christian devil/terrorist Robert Rudolph hid in the Appalachians in NC while he was a fugitive.. It makes sense to hide in terrain challenging to your enemy among people who are sympathetic to your cause. Rudolph was able to evade capture for seven years because most of the people in the area agreed with him even if they did not publicly agree with his actions. do you really want to know or did you just need a random reason to insult muslims?
