  • The easiest way is to have two spoons and give them their own spoon during meals and initially guide their hand to show then how to dip the spoon in, but be prepared for a lot of mess. Its a lot of fun for them but they soon get the idea, it just takes a little while for the hand-eye co-ordination to set in.
  • I let my daughter try to eat on her own at that age but it wasnt until recently (she is 2) that she has been able to spoon feed herself without making a mess. she managed with a fork really well at a year old though. gerber makes a little spoon and fork set that arent too sharp and my daughter loved these
  • at that age it is the hardest to teach them the best age is about 2 when they would actually car ro do it them selves
  • I knew my son was ready to fed himself when he started taking the spoon away from me. He also learned by watching us eat. The best way is not rush him and let him take his time.
  • I really don't think a 12month old will eat with a spoon I work at a daycare and it's hard anough to get 2 year olds to, let alone a 12month old. I say just let her eat with their hands it might get messy, but its a good sensory!
  • 12 months is a good age to just give him a plastic/rubber-coated spoon to play with and hold onto while you are spoon feeding him. Plus, I always fed and kept my babies at the table while the rest of us ate our meal. They truly do learn by example!
  • My nephew learned from watching me. I gave him a baby spoon and he did exactly what I did. Good Luck!
