When a fighter is on the verge of being knocked out, or is knocked out just as the bell sounds: so that the fighter does not lose and has a minute to compose himself.

In the 1800's during the plague and a host of other diseases people were dying at an enormous rate. In turn they where being buried by the thousands. In that time no one really paid attention to the fact that some of these people where not quite dead yet, so they were buried alive. When some of the graves were exhumed. Scratch marks were noticed, so what the coroner decided to do was to tie a string around the index finger of the deceased and at the end of that string was a bell, that was above the grave. If the deceased really was alive the bell would ring when their hand moved. Someone was assigned to watch the grave for a couple of days, until they confirmed death. Hence the term "saved by the bell". Also that was how the "graveyard" shift began.

I thought that you refering to the 80's tv show that I loved to watch as a child. I thought that it meant that the bell saved someone.

I believe "saved by the bell" is an old boxing phrase that relates to a fighter that was about to be knocked down/or out but had the bell ring just in time to allow him to recover furing the round break.

it comes from boxing, the bell is rung at the end of each round, if a boxer is being given the "count" by the ref. [meaning he has ten seconds to continue or face defeat] and the round ends, the bell is rung, the "count" stops, therefore he was saved by the bell.
