i dont know that they do. Most dogs will protect their territory, and stereotypically the mailman will set foot on this territory, causing a dog to go after them. Chances are the same thing would happen with anyone else unknown to the dog, that crosses into their territory.

because he delivers the bills that lead to the argument thats results in someone sleeping in HIS house.

I used to deliver mail years ago when I was still a teenager. I had a few dogs bail me up but one particularly vile dog cornered me between two hedges one day. It was on a farm and no-one was home. I threw the mailbag over one of the hedges and the dog went after it whilst I made my escape. It MUST be the bag. Anyway...... that is what I have always thought since that time.

Mailmen tend to : 1) Walk quickly 2) appear agressive 3) appear to run away . Most dogs wish to greet the stranger, but if they are ignored they may become upset. The rapid movements of the typical postman can be percieved by the dog to be agressive. The postman comes and goes quickly, appearing to the dog to be not confident. . Unless the postman takes steps to make friends with the dog, the dog may decide to take charge and be dominant. . Dogs may be chained outside and/or be bored, or frustrated, and they can react to the postman negatively. . Every situation is different and can go either way.

The mailman makes a quick invasion of the dog's territory, then goes away again, every day. The dog sees this as a deliberate teasing provocation, and responds accordingly.
