Actually I believe it is the other way around - Cool Whip is the brand name and it is whipped topping. I am very often wrong. +5

It can be anything that's whipped... and is used as a topping. Cool Whip is a brand name for a whipped topping. A whipped topping could also be something that is made... like an orange flavored whipped topping. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whipped_topping This is what Wikipedia says about it.
