Why do US soldiers have to grow their beards in Afghanistan? Why can’t they stay clean-shaven?

Beards help protect you from the weather.

Not all soldiers are bearded. Many are clean shaven. If you mingle with the civilian population or are working intellegence, it's much easier to blend in with the general population if one is bearded.
