• I go by what I see and not some PR or brainwashing stuff. Now there are 2 versions of christainity according to SSwarmy. "The christians have distanced themeslves.." So there is the reinvented version which anybody can repudiate at anytime. Hence the tension between the conservative and the liberals. And it is difficult to compare quicksand with clay, because you can always modify the religion as the argument progresses. Now was Pat Robertson preaching love, love when in a Freudian slip made a passionate case for the assasination of Hugo Chavez of Venezuela? When the Britons were fighting the IRA (presumably an Islamic terrorist organisation) and had the Bloody Sunday incident in 1920, was it in the name of love? Just think, how would christians react if Muslims countries invade their countries - talk love, love? How do christians actually fight wars? Any lessons from WWI&II? The Portuguese police were hard on British soccer fans atEuro 2004. That was not even a war.

• In the last several hundred years, no wars have been fought by "Christians" as THE entity fighting, only by countries where the majority of the population were Christians. If someone attacks a western nation, no religious leaders or others interpret it as attacking Christianity, rather attacking that particular country. The point is that nationalism trumps Christianity, whereas Islam tends to trump nationalism.

  Look at it from their side: Christian Nations colonized damn-near three-quarters of the World, over the past 5 centuries. The Nations which have very militaristic and theocratic governments which are Anti-Western, are so in response to their past humiliations and suffering at the hands of colonial powers. Iran, Afghanistan, Nigeria, etc --- The people in these countries are rebelling against Christian powers not just for the sake of rebellion; they are rebelling for REVENGE.

  They all share the common idea that "We were TOO open; TOO forgiving; TOO conciliatory to the foreigners, and thus they took advantage of us; they invaded our countries; they blasphemed against our religion. We cannot and will not let that happen again."

• Nationalism has trumped Christianity for hundreds of years. Nations have long leveraged religion and, in more recent times, atheism for their own political purposes. Nations tend to not genuinely care about religion or atheism, other than how they can use them to control people and obtain more land and/or resources.
   
  However, in some countries, Islam's influence is so powerful and pervasive that it controls the government completely, not just meddles and influences (e.g. Iran). That has not been the case with Christendom for hundreds of years.

• I'm not minimizing the Crusades and all but it was hundreds of years ago. Christianity didn't and doesn't have the market cornered on badness. Organized religion has a black eye when it comes to some of this stuff - as do atheistic governments for that matter. So, the atheists can't sit and point as if they are high and mighty either. Their campaigns of murderous exploitation and oppression is much more recent than the Christians'.

• Then why is it that you wouldn't see large numbers of atheists in other countries cheering them on, wishing them success? The only people that cared about the success of these revolutions, were people inside those countries, and communists from other countries. It was about politics and nationalism, not religion:

  You wouldn't see Atheists who believe in capitalism or even moderate socialism egging on regimes like Mao's or Stalin's. This would logically imply that the most pivotal factor in deciding whether you supported them was whether you were a communist and/or extreme nationalist; not whether you were simply an atheist.

  The majority of people in many Scandinavian countries are liberal Atheists/Agnostics; but they are about as anti-Stalin as most American Christians.

• Ah, it's maybe semantics, but I truly believe people do dastardly things in the mistaken belief (besides the many, power-mad charletons) that they are doing their God's will, rather than to truuuly look at their scriptures. Was it Mahatma Gandhi that said, "I do like your Christ, but I don't much like Christians?" Owch. We need to learn what was meant in the original texts with historical apologetics to back it up(not Joe Schmo's spoon feed muck). It's well known (and documented) that the Bible and other texts were "parables' or wayWe need to think/research for ourselves. And have some respect for the big Man upstairs. He toasted Sodom and Gomorrah and another to the south (within the laws of our universe-most likely an incompletely burned metorite that exploded just above the earth in its atmosphere). Why, if he set them down, whould he break them? Even Einstein, DaVinci,Newton, and Plato hopothesized things that were at the time fanciful and now known to be true (for now...)

Did you read about what the Germans did to the Russian land they retreated from when they were losing the war in Russia during WWII. Did you read what the Germans (christians) did to jews during WWII? Have you heard what was done to heretics by the christians during the inquisition in the name of religion. Did you know that the right to keep slave led to a war in the US, a country that was set up by people who escaped european oppression. Did you read the story of how slaves were treated by the europeans (mostly christian states). Let us confine this dicussion to all-round facts

• If you provide FACTS, maybe your submission that "those things are nothing compared to what the religion of peace did in its history" will be tenable. I doubt if a Jew will agree that killing 6m defenceless people is nothing. The descendants of African slaves will also not agree. So only a few people died during WWI and WWII? Was apartheid an Islamic policy? The inquisition was a church policy. The British government conquered its colonies while the church conveniently tagged along to spread the word. So the deaths resulting from this joint venture were not credited to christianity. But were they muslims the deaths would have been credited to Islam. The British secret service was recently accused of outsourcing torture of its terror suspects to Pakistan. To whom should we credit the torture. Every religion, idea (christianity, democracy, terrorism) wants to convert EVRYBODY to its fold. Child sex slave is everywhere, one cannot blame Islam for it since it does not sanction it.

• After googling the "facts", do we continue the discussion here or at google? My point is that it is fashonable to allude to atrocticies of some people without providing context or balancing it with the conduct of others. The rules on general conduct during wars could not have been in response to the so-called brutality of muslims. Wars were a savage affair in times of old. Islam even has rules to moderate this - women are children are not to be attacked. The Huns were feared for their savagery. Even worse, the Romans once fed thousands of christians to wild animals for entertainment. Soldiers will do virtually anything to win a war. We saw this during WWI & II. Abu Ghraib is a recent manifestation of this.
