  • His wisdom was prudent and applies always, and it mirrors what is seen today. We have compromised our freedom for peace of mind and have neither. Security must be doled out by power, and the power of security is made by control. The vast majority of people aspiring to power do so for power and not for people. We hand our freedom to indifferent ubermenschen, and get nothing in return but lies and illusions.
  • I don't agree with that statement. In any society there has to be some laws to protect people. It works against people when the elected officials no longer listen to the people who elected them. I think it could work in moderation. The problem is getting people to agree what is exactly liberty and how free can people be.
  • He also said Distrust and Caution are the parents of security . I choose to agree with this one more
  • Totally. He also said "hunger is the best pickle". Totally profound, eh?
  • Actually, that is a misquote, which is why some people are having trouble agreeing with it. His words were, "They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." When stated that way, I totally agree. So much so that I used that quote in a Comment here just a few hours ago.
  • I do not. I find it ridiculous. When we drive we give up a little liberty when we follow rules of the road to gain a little security from being killed by others who are speeding or drunk. It is yet another saying from a famous person that means nothing when you examine it closely. :)
  • The idea of perfect security you only have if all people are in prison. And even in the prisons you do not have perfect security. You only can have a mix of reasonable security and freedom. Freedom always is including an abuse.
