This is an exercise in relative velocities. There is a 20 km/hr difference in velocities. Which means that, relative to the slower car, the faster one is approaching at 20 km/hr. Now, convert 20 km/hr to meters per second: 20 km/hr X 1000 m/km X hr/3,600 sec = 5.56 m/sec Now you know that the faster car is overtaking the slower car at 20 km/hr, or 5.56 m/sec. With an initial distance of 100 m, this is a simple problem: 100 m divided by 5.56 m/sec = 17.98 seconds, or 18 seconds if you round it.
