I have a backup hairdryer and a backup analog phone in case our power goes out and the electric phones won't work. I also have a pantry where I keep extra toilet paper, paper towels, and napkins. That's about it. :)

He's probably worried that you have a "back up" husband.

I have backup coffee beans. That's it. Sometimes I buy multiple loaves of bread at one time... but that's rare. Buying back up appliances sounds a little strange to me.
-
We don't do that. If the coffee maker quits we either fix it or get a new one. Going without won't for a day or so won't make a big difference to us. That is true of most appliances, etc. They don't fail all that often.

I have back up on some food, soda and water, toilet paper.

I normally don't run out of anything that has to do with food, toiletries or cleansers. I don't have backup everything else; although I do have some. This may seem a little strange, but I have a back-up vacuum cleaner just in case one of them needs to be fixed. The first time that happened to me I had to wait for over a week and I can not go a week without vacuuming; especially where I live.

I can't afford to have back up appliances even if I wanted to. Of course, it has caused it's share of trouble, like when the hair dryer gave out at the WRONG time. So I can see the logic but I don't have the space for that either.

I always buy the things we need most in quantity when it is on sale. So most things I have do have backups + 5
