What does it mean to 'host a website'? I found an offer for trading a skill I have for "website design and 1 year of hosting" but have no idea what that is . . . sad I know :( Please write to me as you would to a blond, as I really have no idea haha :p

Web hosts are companies that provide space on a server they own or lease for use by their clients as well as providing Internet connectivity, typically in a data center. Web hosts can also provide data center space and connectivity to the Internet for servers they do not own to be located in their data center, called colocation.

One year of hosting means that they will provide space for your website on their servers for one year. A server is the computer that sends the page to your browser when your browser requests it. (It's a bit more complicated than that, but you wanted simple.)

To host a website means to provide the infrastructure for one.

Website hosting is when you basically rent space on a server and move your website there. You then have to register an address (domain name) and link it to the server you are using. Then, when people enter www.melanie.com (or whatever) they would get your site. Presumably the offer you have been given would cover all this, apart from the registration of the domain name (the www bit). But it's only a useful offer if you have an ambition to have your own website.
