  • It is a miracle. However I am not a chemist so my opinion is of no value Burning as I understand it is reaction with oxygen. I presume you're burning a solid and weighing the "ash" = same weight. or mass. I guess a compound could lose part of itself as a gaseous product which is lost, leaving a solid residue the same mass as the original substance. An element would not be able to do that. However, if all combustion products were captured and weighed (massed?) the total products of combustion must always exceed the mass of the original substance.
