  • The evil essence of water.
  • They are full of water which makes them denser and thicker. The thicker ones look dark, but they are really just darker than the sky. It is the contrast that makes them look "black".
  • A denser cloud lets less light pass through it. Just taking a stab.
  • They're not really black. Since rain clouds have more water in them, they absorb a lot more light that normal clouds. This gives them a darker look in contrast to normal clouds which let a lot of light pass.
  • Vertical extent. That's the reason a storm cloud is so dark. The top of the cloud has to reach approx -20C to produce lightning. Short clouds like daytime cu are only about 500 ft tall so plenty of light gets through making them white and fluffy.
