It depends on your age. If you are very young, being in school plays and musicals will help. Later in high school you can take drama class and also do musicals and other things of that nature. If you are in your 20-30's you need acting classes and an agent. And neither one are cheap, but you have to have them. Also a portfolio of yourself taken by a good photographer if you want to do any serious work wouldn't hurt.

Lessons wont "make" talent. Talent is like a muscle; either it's there or it isnt, but if it is there, you gotta work at it and make it stronger. Lessons could help this, and lessons are good at confidence building, however, lessons will NOT 'make' an actor. Half of the people who claim to "want to help you" out there are just con men and are after your cash. Fine, go get some lessons, but stay alert and keep your cash close.

One good way to begin an acting career is to join in the productions at your local theater. They are often run by people who have friends and relatives in the business. Here in my area, a famous actor has his own theater with local actors, and they do auditions all the time. From there you can branch out with a lot of good leads. Don't just go to a school you know nothing about, since it may have no resources to get you what you need.

You're already on the right track. It's important to know that lessons are extremely important, as any artist has to train and sculpt their craft. A lot of schools let you audit, sit in a class for free and watch. If you can, try a few of those or interview with the different schools and ask a lot of questions. Get involved and work at it as much as possible.
