  • I joined the army in 1979, and stayed until 1992. During that time, I got sweared at plenty, but NEVER physically slapped or anything else.
  • I was in the Navy in the early 60s. Boot Camp at Great Lakes Naval Training Center in mid winter was no picnic, and I got yelled at plenty, but never in my time in the navy did any drill master, non-com or officer hit me. I never saw anyone treated with physical violence. They had enough authority in being able to throw you in the brig.
  • Did Basic at Ft. McClellan, Alabama in 1991. Went through a PROTRAIN session where I had 13 Drill Sergeants (2-3 Drills every 2 weeks or so). None used more than a mild curse and there was NO physical contact.
  • Joined the Navy in 1987 and never saw anyone get hit, it would be strictly not allowed. The company commanders did plenty of yelling but not directly at us. There was pressure but no verbal abuse.
  • Joined the Corps in 1998. At Boot Camp, strictly by the book, the your Drill Instructors are not allowed to physically or verbally abuse you. Realisically, while they won't punch or slap you anymore, they will "adjust" your posture (as long as no one with more rank than them is watching). Verbally, I never heard anyone swear while on PI, but they sure made you feel like an ass. Infantry school? All bets were off. We have no problems swearing up a storm or calling you names. Physical contact was officially not allowed, but you had to prove it.
