coon hounds usually have long tails actually all the time plus the face on a coon is longer than a dobermans
-
coonhounds have long hound dog ears compared to the dobermans ears who when uncropped are mid length, but nowhere as long as the coondogs ears.

A vet can usually tell right away.

A friend once told me when he saw his dog licking himself that he said to his grandfather, "I wish i could do that." His grandfather told him to just pet him nicely and he probably would let him. The same applies.. just ask.. No wait..dogs can't talk.. DNA would tell.. Vets aren't always right and coon dogs as well as dobermans are often many generations away from their original parentage. I just wanted to tell that corny joke.

The volunteers at the animal shelter just guess at the parentage, and sometimes the guesses are really wild. Your veterinarian can probably make a more educated guess. If it's really important to you, there are doggie DNA tests now.

What difference does it make it if you're going to keep him?
