I received a little bamboo plant and it's roots are in water (hydroculture). How do I nourish this plant, does it need a chemical?

In my home I have several of these plants. I have a few stalks together with pebbles in a nice vase. Every so often I will change the water. It grows very nice. It will need some sun but does not have to be in direct sun. Every few weeks I give it a little water with drops of Schultz 10-15-10 Plant Food mixed in. The whole legend of this plant is that someone must give it to you as a gift to insure you get good luck. I don't know if this really works, but thought you would like to really know how to care for it.
