And to expand on the assertion given in the question, here is supporting evidence that Joseph Smith both took away from and added to the Book of Revelation: Joseph Smith Translation additions to the Book of Revelation: ========================================================= The seven stars in the Savior's hand are actually leaders of the seven churches. Rev. 1:16, 20 JST Rev. 1:20 The imagery of seven associated with the Lamb is changed to twelve, suggesting the role of the Twelve Apostles in the work of Christ. Rev. 5:6 JST Rev. 5:6 The woman and the man represent the kingdom of God and the Church of Jesus Christ Rev. 12:1—2, 4—5 JST Rev. 12:3, 7 The beast of Revelation 13 is in "the likeness of the kingdoms of the earth." Rev. 13:1 JST Rev. 13:1 Source = http://mi.byu.edu/publications/transcripts/?id=91 Rev. 1: 1-8 John received a revelation from Jesus Christ and delivered it to the leaders over the seven churches in Asia. (compare Revelation 1: 1-8) Rev. 2: 22 The wicked will be cast into hell. (compare Revelation 2: 22) Rev. 2: 26-27 Rev. 5: 6 Twelve servants of God are sent to all the earth. (compare Revelation 5: 6) Rev. 12: 1-17 The woman [the Church], the child [the kingdom of God], the rod of iron [the word of God], the dragon [Satan], and Michael are explained. The war in heaven is continued on the earth. (compare Revelation 12: 1-17; Doctrine and Covenants 77) Rev. 19: 15, 21 God uses the word of Christ to smite the nations. (compare Revelation 19: 15, 21) Source = http://scriptures.lds.org/en/jst/contents From "Understanding the Book of Revelation" by Bruce R. McConkie ============================================================ "Acting by the spirit of prophecy and revelation, Joseph Smith corrected portions, but not all, of what is amiss in the King James Version of the Bible. In the book of Revelation corrections, for instance, the angels of the various earthly churches become the servants (presiding officers) of those units. The lamb with seven horns and seven eyes becomes a lamb with 12 eyes and 12 horns, thus perfecting the symbolism to identify Christ and his apostles. Chapter 12 is so revised as to identify the woman as the church of God and the child that she brought forth as the kingdom of our God and of his Christ. And so forth." Source = http://mi.byu.edu/publications/transcripts/?id=90 From "Adding to the Bible" by Let Us Reason Ministries: ==================================================== God says in the last book of his word Revelation 21:8 “and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.” To sum this all up Joseph Smith said an incredible statement: the book of Revelation was the plainest book God caused to be written. Revelation 22:18-19 “For I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds to these things, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this book; and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the Book of Life, from the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.” I ask the Mormons would these curses would be in effect if anyone added or subtracted to the Book of Revelation in any way. Their reply is this would obviously be so. Unaware that in the Joseph Smith Translation of the Bible: he (Joseph Smith) had added to, or subtracted from the Book of Revelation over 85 times. The Mormons are totally different than mainstream Christians (Mainstream Christians have the 'Get saved so when you die you go to heaven' theology), who call them a cult. For one, Mormons believe that every saved Mormon will become a god and rule his own planet after he dies. They're weird.

I must congratulate you for this question. Very few non-Mormons research which verses are different between the King James Version and the Joseph Smith Translation. I just recently purchased a comparative Bible with these two versions side by side. Since the JST isn't canonized, I'm still getting acquainted with the differences. If Joseph Smith Jr was truly called of God to make the alterations, then the changes become a moot point (God, as the Author retains the rights to make corrections). If Joseph Smith Jr restored what others took out and removed later additions, then it's a moot point.

Many people give paraphrases of the Bible does his version fit as a paraphrase or does it take out portions of the message. We do not have the original and any translation has to make decisions on which English words to use. All translations reflect a persons believes.

What Joseph Smith "took away" from the Book of Revelation were the things others had "added to" it over the centuries. What he "added to" it were the things others "took away". Therefore, Joseph Smith is not under condemnation, but those responsible for the changes he corrected are.
