Does any one know around how much you would get paid for illustrating a children's book if it does quite well. like how much of the profit you would make?

That would depend on the type of contract you had for the artwork. Most artists will work for a fee, once the fee is paid they have nothing further from the project. Other artists who have recognition and therefore more value to the book will be able to negotiate a percentage of the profit for a fee, however this can be less than the straight fee if the book does not sell.
