Help answer this question below.
If this sounds stupid, I apologize.
Have you checked that the output on your DVD player is set to the output connection you're using?
Likewise, have you checked the "input" setting on your TV to make sure it's set to the input jack you're using?
Also, what cables are using? Are you using separate sound and video cables, or an HDMI cable (which carries both the audio and video signals).
Do you need a coaxial cable with HDMI?

thanks for getting back to me, when i turn the tv on there is no light and no menu showing when i press the button for menu. this is part of the problem i think? i cannot choose the input etc? any thoughts?

If I understand correctly, you're talking about the menu for your TV (as opposed to the menu for the DVD player that's being displayed on your TV).
You ought to at least get a start up menu when you first plugged in the TV and turned it on. If you didn't, then there's probably something wrong with the TV.
Best recommendation I can give you is to call the place you bought it and have them walk you through a couple of diagnostics.
Sorry -- I wish I could be of more help, but it's tough without seeing the components.

thats what i reckon too, thanks for getting back so quickly - i think it could be something called the backlight which, as i understand it, would mean there would be no ability to get a picture at all. I will let you know how i get on with them when i call on monday. any other thoughts would be appreciated.
