Why is BET (Black Entertainment Television) not considered racist by society, but WET (White Entertainment Television) would be?

In short "Why is something labeled "White " racist but labeled "Black" not?". Simply put, blacks in the U.S have had no other identity other than race to identify themselves as a distinct people. Whites may trace their roots to many different ethnicities which give them a variety of labels other than race. Examples like "Irish Pub","Italian resturant","Jewish holiday","Armenian TV","French cuisine" are but a few. None are considered racist, although all are exclusively white. The label "Black" reflects the difficulty in tracing specific heritage to any one of the different peoples of Africa and is also but an adopted racial category introduced by Europeans. Formally Africans identified themselves by tribe, nation or clan, not by race. Thus the creation of the term "Afro-American" that better signifies heritage and is becoming more widely spread.

This is similar to having "Black History Month" and not "White History Month." All of the other channels are presumed to be WETs.

- I wouldn't name it WET. As someone else mentioned that would be a porno show that would be on at 3:00 AM. How about WIN? That would stand for the White Independent Network. Why Independent? Because all of the other channels out there are so anti-American, anti-Constitutional, and pro-UN (United Nations), liberal, and pro NWO (New-World-Order). Actually, there should be no channel that is labeled as pro any particular race. We should be trying to save the Constitution that all of the others in our government are trying to destroy. The NWO people are not racist either. After all, we had Bush and Cheney that have done a tremendous amount of damage to the US Constitution and now we have Barack Husein Obama and his other anti-US Cronies doing the same thing. We shouldn't be concerned with a racist TV station, we should be concerned with bad (very, very, bad) people of all races whose desire is to rule over other people. Believe it or not, there are many people out there of ALL races that are even more dangerous than Hitler. Yes there are plenty of power-hungry, psycho nuts out there that want to control your lives. These people actually think they are better and smarter than you just because they have more money or political position. They actually believe they are more smart and more powerful than God. In fact, most of them don't believe in God and that is another reason why they think they have the authority to rule your lives. WAKE UP AMERICA ! ! ! Before it's too late.

I just watched the BET AWARDS and it is a very racist channel. The Host made 'white jokes', several presenters/recipients (including Alicia Keys) gushed about how beautiful and great Black people are, even saying 'everyone wants to be like us (black)', and several times they told the audience to vote for Obama (presumably just because he is 'black', not for any policy issue).
To find out if this is racist, exchange the word 'black' for 'white' and imagine it coming from white entertainers. Can you imagine Billy Crystal hosting the 'white entertainment awards' making black jokes and Celine Dion gushing about how white people were so beautiful and great & how everyone wants to be white, and every award winner implored the audience to vote for McCain (because he is white).

They all would have been arrested.

People say NBC, CBS, MTV etc. are in effect 'White Networks' but this is manure. MTV & the MTV awards are teeming with black people & you NEVER hear any pro-white speech which is the norm on BET. Yeah Seinfeld didn't have any black people, but how many white people were on 'Girlfriends'?

Everyone give blacks a free pass on this issue because their ancestors were treated horribly in the past. But its 2008. How can we treat each other as equals when the rules are different for some?

We are so sold on what society has dumped on us for years being whiter is better for everybody! pretty white pretty cute faces, it sells everyone will watch a pretty blue eyed over a ugly talented person that's what America wants to see, now the black people have there own shows producers but still have to answer to people who own the networks. Jewish white folk! so sad. I been raised to love everybody what ever race or creed your from and for the most part I do, but what wee see and feel is far from the truth! I'm black and I HATE BET ,because all they do is sell crap to this country about what they think black people are supposed to be like!,I say it's all a load of shit.....Any agreements?Imean ,what about the blacks who don't want to stereotyped anymore?

- I totaly hear you. how can people say that the white networks pain blacks with a bad brush (Bernie Mac, Fresh Prince, Cosby, Family Matters) the shows on BET are as bad as the shows on MTV and I do not want people thinking those degenerates represent me.

I feel that as long as groups isolate or identify themselves as belonging to a particular "group" then there will always be racial issues. While groups like the NAACP and United Negro College Fund do amazing work, in the long run they are in a sense continuing to segregate a portion of the population which fans the fire of racism and inequality.

- ELM, noone is claiming that races do not exist... we are saying stop making race an issue. I am lucky to live in Washington STATE (not to be confused with beaurocrat central on the opposite side of the continent) we eliminated affirmative action (first issue I was able to vote on) the majority of the people pushing it were blacks who recognised that while affirmative action benefited them, it was racist and needed to be abolished. due to having never gone further east than AZ and spending 90% of my life in WA I guess I may be sheltered from how racism impacts things elsewhere... but from what I have observed the smallest minority out there today IS racists.

It's because we as black ppl were not treated as equals to others! Martin L. King had walks because Resturants wouldn't allow us to be seated up front, it's because we had to sit in the back of public transportation or give up our seat to others, it's because of unjust acts like these were done to blacks. And you have the Audacity to say it's because of our leaders? Tell me this, Why do black men get more time in prison for commenting the same crimes as their white counterparts. Why are there way more missing white children reported on tv than black children? Look at what happened to Rodney King, or the black guy that was dragged from the back of a pickup truck by several whites guys as his body torn into pieces..These are some of the reasons why we need black leaders, to stand up for our rights! - oh woe is me!!!! a while ago my ancestors were abused. because of that I will pretend that every time on of my own is abused it is an example of the present state of affairs. guess what, my ancestors were driven from multiple states and it was even written into law that we were to be shot on sight. they even sent the US army out to kill us after we fled west. life goes on.
  any time someone is aided or neglected with race as a contributing factor it is racism. yes the NAACP is racism. 50 years ago it may have been a necessary evil, but today it is nothing but more injustice that martin luthor king would have fought against. I believe the great man that was MLK would be disgusted with the behavior of "revrend" jessie jackson if he were still alive.
  I have not personaly seen the rodney king footage, but I have seen other footage the black community tried to use to claim racism, the guy was fighting back. if you do not want the cops to kick your ass surrender! perhapse if the dominant black culture did not glorify antisocial behavior they would not have as many people in jail. guess what, whites who join that culture have no better odds of avoiding prison, and blacks who leave that culture have no worse odds I do.
  and by the way, my people have been dragged behind pickup trucks too and the actions of the evil mobs are evil regardless of the demographic they attack and their behavior is not avoided by segregating yourselves.

Same old, same old. The white culture is dominant, with a vengeance. There is no need to celebrate the white culture, or the heterosexual culture. The only people who need to celebrate their culture are those who are oppressed. The only people who call for the dominant culture to be celebrated are either ignorant of what is going on, lacking in empathy, or are either racist or homophobic.

You speak a very real truth, but many will try to deny it. Have you noticed the Miss Black America pageant? The United Negro College Fund? Quotas where less qualified black students are accepted into college over more qualified ones. It's time to put race aside, but the race card is still useful to some groups, so they will hang on to it as long as it serves a purpose that benefits them.

Basically, all other networks are White Entertainment Television because there are so few if any quality programming with African Americans leading the cast on those networks. On networks like ABC, NBC, CBS, and FOX, you might see one African American or other minority thrown into the mix just to make the program appear racially diverse. Usually, the African American character has a minor almost insignificant role. BET and BFC (Black Family Channel) are the only networks with programming consistently targeting the African American audience (as well as other audiences). Although, both networks could use some improvement in programming, I'm still thankful for them anyways.

I fail to see your pattern. while I have never heard of the BFC which probably has better programming than BET, from what I have seen of BET it is the black equivilant of MTV. I certainly would not want people thinking MTV was a good protrayal of white people... it makes us look like a bunch of degenerates.

- BET is very different from those networks. golf is boring as hell, Nasa is scientific and Cspan is full of multiple blood sucking arachnids (Poli Ticks)... BET is equivilant to MTV, both channels we would be better off without.

I battled with myself on the issue of whether I should answer this question or not and after reading some of the answers, I couldn't help but share my opinion...

I guess that in a sense, Wolfen, BET is atleast partially considered "racist"- or otherwise this question wouldn't have been asked, right? Unfortunately, I can't explain why some would take it that way but I feel comfortable saying that for Blacks to have come so far as to have the ability to network a station directed wholly to their own race, why wouldn't they?
No offense to anyone, of course, but looking beyond
the surface (and being as honest with yourself as possible), there are somewhat a variety of "WET" networks- MTV being at the forefront.
Whether BET needs some "shaping up" is a matter of opinion, and to answer your question, it IS considered racist by society, whether admitted or not.

  In any event, my point in answering Wolfen's question was to say that BET is considered racist- a couple of people's answers suggest that they themselves seem to think so- and that it probably shouldn't be considered such a big deal when it's nearly the only network for Blacks. I work at an inner city school with all black and latinos. The worst insult one kid can say to another is to call them 'white'. Everybody laughs at whoever was called white.

Blacks and latinos are every bit as racist as whites. And even more so because somehow its accepted by society. A black guy can say ANYTHING HE WANTS TO about blacks or whites and get away with it. A white guy? He gets fired. (Don Imus)

I still consider b.e.t. to be racist because it shows blacks as a one demensional people who only listen to hip hop music and use slang terms. B.e.t only shows us in our urban stereotype.The images shows on b.e.t especially in music videos reminded me of a minstrel show.

Has anyone ever wondered why spanish is a requirement for our children, and english is not a requirement for spanish children? While the Blacks and Whites fight and argue about stupid crap, the mexican people are slowly migrating northward. If you have ever been in Southern CA, FL, TX AZ or NM you know what I am talking about. And they have 5 channels of LTV.

- The thing with the black history month is that all of history education (at least here in the UK) seem sto be focused on the achievements of white people- kids know all about Henry VIIIth but not Rosa Parks- black history month aims to address the ommision of people of colour from traditional ideas of what constitutes history.

BET is only racist towards black people, its a very bad representation. and if you look it up i'm sure you will find that black people dont own BET. and its more of a minority thing, since white people or a majority, its just implied that channels are geared towards white people. to call it WET would be redundant. just like products, hair products dont specify they are for white people, its implied, black hair care products are marked as such because the products are a minority in the grand scheme. i in no shape or form approve of BET, i dont watch it and wouldnt allow my children to watch it.

It's not that being white isn't okay or racist. It's that a majority of Americans are, in fact, white; thus, the programming on most cable and mainstream television is geared towards either a general audience, or a white audience. Being completely honest, WET is basically every other channel.

As a larger (growing) minority, there are going to have to be instances where changes have to be made to adapt the differences between these cultures and interests.

A statue was based on the picture but they changed it to a black man a white man and a couple others. All the people that did it that were in this picture was white. How is rewriting history ok? - No, it's not right to do that at all; I completely agree with you. Sacrificing blatant truth for feelings and inclusion is not going to solve anything at all. I can see why they would do that (from a professional perspective), but no, it isn't right. By completely disregarding the other men who participated in the raising of the flag, that is disrespecting them and if they were mad, they would have good reason to be. The thing is that people will use ethnicity as a means of finding loopholes or seeing some benefit in arguing, so I suppose we try and avoid it by being so PC, although it contradicts its own purpose by creating more tension between races, because it makes us inequal to eachother in that way.

Of course it is racist. When a suggestion of White entertainment station was raised in 2005, minorities were upset and ready to march. It is just pathetic. For some unknown reason it is okay to have Black entertainment awards, tv, etc, but if whites ever even thought of that, oh my God! Major protest! Gimme a break. It is simple reverse discrimination. But we just cave in to it. Have been for years. You know Martin Luther King wanted EQUAL rights. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton have screwed that one up good, though. Good ole America.

I have found more racist feeling among minorities toward the prevailing majority than the other way around, simply because they ARE minorities. I am very dark-skinned myself, but have never felt any sort of discrimination toward me, but I find it easier to converse on a candid level with those of minority races.

Keep on blaming the whites for the hard time their grandparents had.

yes it was hard being a slave, but now the US is a great country. Many countries that for example were enslaved by arabs, were set back by many years.
If your grandparents were not slaves, the US will not be what it is today and you will still pick bananas and run naked in Africa.

It is the society's fault for tolerating racist stations like BET and feeling some kind of a guilt.

What about africa. Has anyone heard of a WET of some kind, because whites are a minority there? I think not.

What a whole TV chanel that celebrates blacks in this day and age. How do they get sponsors? Black viewers, Black consumers, Black voters. Whites ruled the airwaves for years. racism is only a one way street

due to our awful treatment of black and red indian people in the past (i know it was a long time ago but hear me out please) it is a stigma that we as white people will have to live with for a long time..............

200 years ago was the abolition of slavery but if you look closer in some countries around the world IT STILL GOES ON but in a slighly different way.

a few examples are:

child labour in India & China (and many other countries)

trafficking of young teenage girls from Eastern Europe to work as prostitutes in the West.

these are ALL examples of modern day slavery which will always be remembered by victims of Racism and will always be a stigma for the white race.

Most television _is_ white television. To call something white television wouldn't say a whole lot. . .LOGO offers gay entertainment. There are Christian channels. There's a History channel. I agree with Galeanda; channels and shows cater to an interest, sometimes (but not always) spurred by a minority group who wants expression. And again, mainstream television is already very white. . .

First of all, just because the network is named BET doesn't mean that the programing is intended for Black audiences only! ANYONE who is a fan of Urban music which includes; R&B, and Hip-Hop,or those who like Hip Hop culture, and African American culture watches BET. The only reason Robert Johnson started this network in the early 80's was because Micheal Jackson was the only African American entertainer who's videos were getting played on MTV. (The last time I checked Robin Thicke, Eminem, and Paul Wall were white!) Why is everyone getting bent out of shape over a name? This network is simply celebrating the accomplishments of Black entertainers in America today. So yes, starting "White Entertainment Television" as a means of retaliation would cause an issue because, at least 75% of television and films today are already predominately white. If I'm not mistaken, BET was sold to VIACOM not too long ago, and their Chairman is a white guy. So, if the name offends you that much tell them to change it. There are way to many other important issues going on in America today to be worried about the name of an "Urban" network. Oh yeah, the UNCF was not intended for "Blacks only" either, anyone can go to college through this organization.

- Very few African slaves and their families starved to death because they couldn't find work. I am not trying to diminish the brutality of their total loss of personal freedom, but I would just like remind folks that they weren't the only segment of society that has ever been treated in ways that today we would condemn.

  And yes, we can, but when you look at the results of what happened, Ireland is a modern democracy (albeit one with no natural forest left) whereas almost all non-European colonised nations today have suffered intensely from some form of postcolonialism.

Do you mean nations that were colonised by non-Europeans? Or do you mean non-European areas that were colonised by Europeans? If the latter, then it would include the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, which aren't doing too badly, thank you very much. The former colonies where things are going not so well are those where the population of European descent was a minority when the colony attained independence. Although India isn't doing too badly; they have enough money for nuclear weapons and they're not cheap.

  The paradox about slaves and food is the dilemma between feeding enough to get maximum work out of them and not feeding so much that they were less efficient economically. It was still in the slave-owner's interest to keep them fed and alive.

white is the new black. It is okay for any other race to be racist to themselves a perfect example here is the "n" word. Gangster rap is PERFECTLY accpetable to perpetuate negative black stereotypes, as long as your Black. It can be done so much so that it is common place. However the second a white kid says "Nword" they are the racist. Have you ever met whites that hate other whites based on skin color? Now go listen to Chris rocks "blacks vs N*ggers" routine.. you tell me whos racist. And this isnt just blacks. Have you ever been treated crappy at a chinese or japanese restraunt while some chinese or japanses family gets royal treatment? I dont hate anyone based on their skin color. What I hate is hypocrisy. And the message we teach is it is okay to be racist, unless you are white.

because black america plays the race card only when it is to their advantage. if there was a WET or a united WHITE college fund or national association for the advancement of white people; Jesse Jackson would be marching in the street along with all his other buddies who have never really had to work for a living. all in all, black people are much more racist then white people

We can have Miss Black America, but not Mis White America, we can have the United Negro College Fund, but I bet if we had the United White College Fund, Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton would have a fit. Whats fair for one is fair for the other. Its time for some of the blacks to stop being racist.

Well If BET wants to start a show similar to MTV's real world, featuring an all black cast, why should MTV include a black member on their cast. Doesn't EOE apply to BET? Blacks say the other programs are not aimed to entertain them and such, but look at movies, there are black actors, and cast members. Look at sports, there are many black sports casters.

- you make a good point about the movies and sports television. and i've never seen the BET show that's like real world but from my understanding, (if we're talking about the same show) the similarity lies mostly in the fact that they're both reality shows. the BET show is made up of students who all go to the same university, Southern University in Louisiana. they're all black because it's an HBCU, and there are few white people who attend, not because BET was trying to exclude white people.
  also, i wasn't aware that MTV was made for white people? if it's not, it shouldn't matter who they pick to have on their cast for real world, as we're all equal.

- most of the cast is made majority of whites just recently they started putting more than the 1 token black person on the show.im talking about mtv. i like both channels but i do understand why bet was created to give those black artist and actors a forum. not too long ago the only part a black person could play in a studio film was a maid.if we waited on whites to give us the smae parts or respect as white artist and actors we would not be as far as we are.

It is a legitimate point but it also has legitimate arguments against it. Blacks have historically been suppressed by the white media so they decided to "fight back" with the introduction of BET. I think all spokespeople for EVERY creed are annoying personally. I mean come on! Affirmative action says that if a white man and a black man are applying for the same job the and the white man is more qualified, the black man could still get the job in order for the company to meet its hiring ratio. Is that racist? HA!

- This kind of thing does happen, and consider this an Asian chap has been prosecuted in our courts for making repeated civil cases of discrimination he would apply for jobs he wasn't suitable or qualified for and then sue when he was refused siting racial discrimination these cases would often be sorted out of court and he had made literally hundreds of thousand of pounds out of it.
