Not through yahoo, but through something like IRC you could. In order to trace someones IP, you really need a direct connection to them. With Yahoo chat, you connect to the Yahoo server, not the person. So yahoo could trace your ip, but the person you are speaking with likely couldn't.

well it is possible to locate your ip address through an yahoo messenger. let me go into detail so you could understand well when you are connected to the internet you have an ip address as you know. now when you connect to different users on the internet through the yahoo Messenger your computer first gets connected to yahoo server and then from there to your friend`s computer. your comp--------->Yahoo server------------>friend comp so if one did wanted to find your ip he or she has to first bypass the yahoo server or hack into it, to its database which is quite easy . so for some protection use a good firewall. check out this website http://www.happyhacker.org/defend/index.shtml
