It's devastating every time I've lost a pet. They have all been part of the family.

I just put our terrier of 9 down the other day and I have to tell you, I have never felt as sad or empty (even when my relationship of 7 years ended) as I do right now. Sadie had what we can only assume was a fatal illness (lost a great deal of weight, wouldn't eat regularly, couldn't move very well anymore, breathing erratically) but they couldn't diagnose the problem. This was a super spunky little dog with a ton of personality; when we stopped seeing that in her, we finally had to make the decision that she wasn't going to get better and it wouldn't be right or loving to watch her decline any further. I had no idea how I would feel as she slipped away that day. I had never experienced anything quite like it before. So, yes I'm devastated by the loss but I do believe it WILL get better with some time. When you put that much love out there, it has a tendency to come back to you in ways you could never imagine. If you have close friends, use them as a support system. Talk about how you feel; cry, whatever. Remember how much your pet gave to you (and vice versa) what a good life he or she had being part of your family. And, YES our pets are members of our family and feelings of grief and loss are normal!! I wish you the best. Hang in there.
