  • The "gates" that separate the Panama Canal into sections are also known as "canal locks". Logically, a small submarine might be able to shadow a big cruise ship passing through the canal but this is not without very obvious dangers. look here for a more detailed history and explanation on how the canal works: http://psychcentral.com/psypsych/wiki/Panama_Canal
  • I doubt this would ever happen. When exiting each of the three locks the Panama Canal uses the boat is brought to a water level matching the body of water it is about to go into. If the boat was submerged it would be hard to do. My thought is not really workable. If you are interested in more facts about Panama go here: http://www.panamalaw.org/panama_lifestyle.html
  • No, the lock fill with water fo float ships through them and there isn't enough room for a sub to be there at the same time.
  • Only in a James Bond movie. The security is way too high here for anything like that to happen. I did see a sub exiting the canal along the causeway around November last year, it was top side of course or I wouldn't have known it was there. Back to a serious note. Many of the freighter that travel the canal only have a two foot clearance in the locks so that doesn't leave much of an opportunity for some sub to give it a try. Here's the picture I took of it from the Amador Causeway you have to look closely at the water to see the top of it sticking out For other types of information about Panama see http://www.panamaexpertos.com/ For other information about Panama see http://www.panamaexpertos.com/
  • I suppose if one had a very small mini sub, like the one man mini subs the Japanese had during WWII. It might be possible then to hide within the shadow of a larger ship while transiting. However, this is extremely unlikely, as the security measures in place in the Panama Canal would pretty much preclude even this. A larger submarine would have virtually no chance because there would not be enough room in the locks for this, with other ships there.
