A master cylinder is the device that holds a reservoir of brake fluid and forces it into the brakes when the brake pedal is stepped on.

- A little bit general,but essentially correct. When you step on the brake pedal, the pedal pushes on a linkage, which pushes on a rod in the master cylinder, which pushes hydraulic fluid to the brake components at the wheel, which push on the brake linings, which create friction and slow the car down.

2002 honda civic, the brake pedal went all the way to the floor, could not stop using the brakes, had to use the hand brake. Pumped the brakes it worked, then they went all the way to the floor again without braking. I was told master cylinder, 67,000 mi?
