Because you cant see them. Typed words does not show true emotion. They can be laughing typing a sad story. And most of them has issues and cant live in the real world. Shy ppl are the loudest, spontaneous, and confident person for 2 reasons: 1. They cant act like that in the real world, real time reactions, real time conversation. When you have time to think of what to say then you will always have a strong response. Which will make them sound like whoever they would want to be looked at as in your mind. 2. They can control and change their image as a person and get away with it.

Maybe they find it fun. I've done it before....to people who took the Internet way too seriously, so I can understand where they are coming from.

i think in most cases they are bored or like living in a fantasy world and don't realize we are not part of that world.
