The terms left and right come from revolutionary France if memory serves. In basic terms the left tends to be more liberal and the right more conservative. To be fair it is a bit of a false dichotomy. Too simplistic. For example you can be right wing economically (free market) but anti-authoritarian or to the left economically (socialist or whatever) but deeply authoritarian. This is an interesting idea, it breaks the linear left/right dichotomy somewhat. http://www.politicalcompass.org/ It is a difficult question to answer in general terms so if you want further explanations please feel free to ask in a comment.

well, in the US, you obviously have two main parties, the democrats and the republicans, and within the united states you have two main issues on which to base your politcal ideologies, cultural and economic cultural deals with certain issues such as abortion, gay marriage, the environment, ect. and economics deals with certain things such as taxes, and how to best control the economy ok, now we have that basis,... liberals tend to want' less government intervention on the cultural side and more on the economic side, republicans tend to want more government intervention on the cultural side and less on the economic side. but, you can mix it up, you dont necessarly have to follow that exactly, and i hope this helps
