Well I am a neurologist so I thought that I would try to help with an answer to your question, Side Effects of Propranolol. Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); chest pain; disorientation; fever with aching and sore throat; hallucinations; memory loss; mental or mood changes; numbness or tingling of the hands; persistent or severe vision changes; red, swollen, blistered or peeling skin; severe dizziness; shortness of breath or wheezing; sudden unusual weight gain; swelling of the hands, ankles, or feet; unusual bruising; unusually slow heartbeat; very cold or blue fingers or toes. Long term propranolol treatment and changes in body weight after myocardial infarction. OBJECTIVE--To determine the effect of long term propranolol treatment on body weight. DESIGN--Retrospective analysis of data from a placebo controlled randomized double blind clinical trial (the beta blocker heart attack trial). PATIENTS--3837 Men and women randomized 5-21 days after an acute myocardial infarction to treatment with placebo or propranolol for up to 40 months. Patients were followed up at annual visits. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE--Changes in body weight. RESULTS--At the first annual visit patients treated with propranolol had gained more weight than those given placebo (mean weight gain 2.3 kg v 1.2 kg respectively, mean difference 1.2 kg (95% confidence interval 0.9 to 1.5]. These group differences remained at the second and third annual visits. The difference in weight gain could not be explained by discrepancies in the use of diuretics or in physical activity and was similar in patients of both sexes and of all ages. CONCLUSION--Long term beta blockade results in a sustained weight gain. cipralex? Can these tablets make you put on weight? Some of my patients have said things like: I have been on cipralex for 2 months and I cannot sleep for more than 2 hours at a time. I was on 10mg and have now gone down to 5mg one day and 10 the next. I feel agitated and anxious all the time - Dianne This is the 3rd medication that I have been put on for my depression. First it was Prozac and that stopped working after a year. The next one was Lexapro and that one didn't work at all. Now I am on cipralex and this on is working much better. - nana I've been on Cipralex for a couple of years (on and off) - with me they definitely make you gain weight and do have the sexual side effects too. But you just have to live with it! - Helen Atkinson I was put on Cipralex about 3 months ago. I encountered a plateau at about 2 months so I went back to the doctor. He raised my dose from 10mg to 15 and I'm getting crazy side effects already. Does anyone have the same experiences? Any suggestions? - Alex Today the doctor has given me Cipralex. She claims I shouldn't gain weight and the chances are less that it will affect me sexually. (I'm on 10 mg). I'm also concerned how I will sleep on it as I suffer with insomnia anyway. - sandra

I'm pleased to have helped. The drug companies are "All powerful! and they would appear to sometimes "Move the goal posts!" regarding the side effects of some medications. At the group of hospital's that I work for, we have a system that is called the "Medicate Database!" it enables us to try and be more accurate in our ability to diagnose some medical conditions and the treatment that we can prescribe. Ages back, I came to the conclusion that "I will always treat my patients, in the way that I would like to be treated if I were a patient!" Thanks for your feedback.
