I personally think shape and appearance have much to do with health. self esteem has a huge effect on health, appearance has a huge effect on self esteem, health has a huge effect on appearance.....its a cycle. and I think a proper diet should be used for all those reasons.

Yes and no. Losing weight absolutely is better for your health and can lessen the risk of many diseases. So the importance is crucial. But in society people who are overweight or obese also are in a way forced to feel bad about themselves due to societal pressure. This can lead to depression which is also terrible on the individual and family and health. It's sad, but for some it's true. So, for some people the act of losing weight and feeling better about the way they look is important too. I would use an example of a 15 year old girl. With all the pressures teens have, this girl probably would be relatively healthy overweight, but it would be improving the way she feels about herself that would bring the most happiness to her. I use this example because my young daughter struggles with her weight and I see the pain in her eyes when she can't find her size or wear the clothes the other girls are wearing. Her health right now is great, but her self-esteem isn't. And as her mom I wish she felt beautiful, because that's all I see.
