Why don't they install chain-link mesh cones on the front of jet engines?

    I would think that the actual links would cause the formation of pockets of turbulence or vortices that could, potentially, rip the turbines to pieces.

    Because the air passes thru there at incredible speeds, and any obstruction would cause problems.
