1) What do you need it to do? I don't need a large screen or an optical drive, so why should I pay extra for them? 2) How much are you willing/able to spend? 3) Does it have a good record for reliability/durability? 4) Battery life. Longer is better to a point, but not all of us need 6+ hours, especially not if the battery is too big/heavy to justify the run-time. 5) Are you going to want to carry the thing around? Many "laptops" are only called that because they fold in half and have batteries. If it's too big to shove in a bag and/or too heavy to carry comfortably, why bother?

1) coolness 2) does it work? 3) can I play incredibly AI intensive games on it? 4) $$$ 5) Will it kill anyone who types the password wrong more then three times?

1-Check to see if the operating System will work on the laptop - vista is terrible on slow computers 2-Memory for games, additional software and anything else is really important 3-Ensure the size,weight and durability suit your lisestyle, no point carring a heavy, large object on you back all day. 4-Graphics Card for gaming etc is important
