It depends on how the meds affect you. I have seen people not give a hoot about anything while on certain pills. Lasted a long time and then they tried another and it wasn't as bad of an effect but still really didn't seem to give two hoots about certain responsibilities. Not sure if it was just the pills or the personality.

please don't ask me things like this right now,i'am tired and so wound up ,,,all i want to do is SLEEP !!!
-
as stated depends on the side effects of the drug, if they do work well and you take them correctly they are very helpful abuse them harmful..
-
The widespread use is deadly, especially for children but they are doing wonders for me.

In general, they are good for the adults in need. I've seen them work wonders for people (I'm a nurse). I'm not sure if all the people taking them should have been easily prescribed them, but then again, how do we know which are more deserving? I wouldn't want the criteria to be a person who just tried to kill themself type cause. It's hard to know where to draw the line.

I am in no way a doctor or psychiatrist, but I believe this is bad and in the USA way too many people are medicated.
-
I don't know whether it is harmful. My best friend is still depressed. It seems that the widespread use of antidepressant/anti-anxiety medications is not helpful. And she is putting on weight.
-
I think it's helpful to some and harmful to some. They have major side effects to most of them. I do think that doctor's just give them out first time and they don't wait to see if therapy alone will work. I am against patients taking them unless we have tried therapy and they are getting worse. Some of the drugs actually make people suicidal. They all make you gain weight. If I have a patient with low self esteem how is gaining weight going to raise that self esteem. It's not more than likely. I believe anti anxiety drugs are helpful to most people and they don't have nearly as many side effects.

I think Drs give it out too much. We have an 8 year old in our schoolwho is obese and the doc gave him Prozac. C'mon. I think they are owned by the pharma companies.
-
Although I believe they are over-prescribed because of the kick-backs doctors get from the pharmaceutical companies; I also think they have helped a lot more people than they've hurt.

If it is under a doctor's care it is helpful. If it is self-administered it may be helpful but it could be harmful. Over-the-counter drups are generally less effective than prescription drugs. :)
