Actaully my brother had a genetic hearing loss in one ear so he claims, and the same happened to me a few years later. I hear about 80% from my left ear.

You can protect your ears from loud sounds by using earplugs. So by the same reasoning, if you usually hear those loud sounds in one ear, like being closer to a speaker or have earphones where one is loud, then you can lose the hearing in just one side. The sound coming in one ear damages the eardrum on that one side.
