  • I have read all information that is available about the endangered Finches. There is nothing to suggest that they wait for the thistle to bloom before they build their nests. Here is a brief summary of their reproductive behavior: . 'Reproductive biology Most finches build a cup-shaped nest of grasses and other plant fibers and locate it in a tree or shrub or in a rocky crevice. Most species breed as isolated pairs, but some others are loosely colonial. Once a pair of finches bonds for the breeding season, they are typically monogamous. They lay two to six eggs, which vary in color and markings among species. The eggs may be incubated by the female or by both sexes in turn. Both of the parents share in tending the young and fledglings.' . For more information please see: http://www.answers.com/main/ntquery?s=Finches&gwp=13
  • Some wild finches wait but most do not. Goldfinches are one of the last birds to start nesting because they prefer to feed on seeds from late maturing plants, so those plants need time to grow and go to head. In the western USA they nest earlier (May, June)because their food source happens earlier. In the east they may wait until August before nesting. They stay together in small flocks until that time.
