  • Because God had a plan for them and part of His plan was for them to be small!
  • That's nature's way of protecting them. The smaller something is, the harder it is to catch. Also, small things are considered "not worth the chase" by natural predators, because what you gain from all of that chasing is not a filling meal. Lastly, if they were much larger, they might not be able to "hover" as they do, when cross-pollinating flowers.
  • If they were the size of a Blue Whale they'd be really scary, pretty much because they'd eat everything in sight like some kind of alien space critter in order to sustain it's ultra high metabolism. And it would be really hard to think of them as "cute" when they're a hundred feet long and devouring everything in their path...
  • ..everything has it's place in natures playground... ....hummers love the tiny insects we can barely see so their speed and size make them perfect little missles seeking out insect prey...
  • I don't know but they are cute!
  • Same reason why albatrosses are so large. They evolved into small birds to fit into their niche in the nature.
