I am not sure why it would hinder learning. I think it is a good idea to allow children the opportunity to learn independantly, and researching things by themselves etc.

repetition is always the way that you will learn best. but too much homework can just turn kids off.
-
It depends on what kind of student you're dealing with. Some people are intelligent and independant enough for it to be helpful in the learning process by giving them more experience with an idea. But if a student is having difficulties, or if they don't really understand the concept they're trying to learn yet, then all it does is de-motivate them and make the learning process seem difficult and unpleasant for them. So it's really a matter of individuals, some people can pick something up on their own and be completely didactic, whereas some people need a more hands-on instructional approach.

Homework sucks, what happens in school stays in school.

I view homework as an exercise that allows students to work with, explore, and examine the concepts that I taught in class. Listening to theory and putting it into practice are two completely different things. I can explain how something works but unless they get the chance to try it for themselves, it may never make sense to them. That said, there is a HUGE difference between a useful assignment that gets them to think about the material and increase their understanding and busy work. In my classes, if an assignment doesn't have a practical application, I usually change it or do away with it completely.

Sometimes the problem with homework is that it tests what students know, rather than teaches them new things which would be more useful. I don't think it can really hinder learning unless a huge amount is given leading to too much stress and pressure being put onto a pupil. Homework is often given with too little thought in my opinion. It should be as well thought through as class work and should engage children through interesting activities rather than repetitive simple question answering. Still, I do think it aids education more than it hinders it.

I think homework is very neccessary for alot of people. Most people have to have a way to study, and gets hands on experience.
-
I truly can't be bothered with it. I prefer to show my knowledge in tests, and many of my teachers have commented on that. They know that I understand my work, and predict that I'll do fine in life

i think that independent study is very helpful but i think that young kids should have time set aside for it during school hours so they can get a teacher's help if they need it and actually be kids when they leave the school for the day or for the weekend and for older kids i think homework time should be minimal so they have time to explore other interests, work or do what they need to become well rounded

It's certainly not a hinderence to learning. I think it's kind of a waste of time though. I haven't had homework all year since I have mostly AP classes, and I'm doing better than ever. I can now focus on studying more, which works better for me personally. Of course, there's people who won't do anything useful with their free time.

My feeling is that homework is a waste of time. People who are capable of teaching themselves are going to do that automatically, and those who are not are effectively completing busy work. Teachers should put more focus on what they are doing during their workday, rather than finding things for parents to do for them or for students to do on their own. Isn't it enough that they get a year's pay for nine month's work? At least they should be working for that while they are there, which I am sad to say, few do.

Helpful? No way. It's just busy work that doesn't really teach kids anything new and robs them of allll of their other time that they should be investing in their relationships and other activities. "...many countries with the highest scoring students, such as Japan, the Czech Republic and Denmark, have teachers who give little homework. "At the other end of the spectrum, countries with very low average scores -- Thailand, Greece, Iran -- have teachers who assign a great deal of homework...Undue focus on homework as a national quick-fix, rather than a focus on issues of instructional quality and equity of access to opportunity to learn, may lead a country into wasted expenditures of time and energy." http://www.physorg.com/news4333.html

Personally I think that homework is a waste of time, in the 3-4 hours of homework i'm set a night I could learn about things that really mean something to me, and i'm interested in. I could focus on revising the harder subjects, or catching up from all the illness i've had, rather than doing poinless bits of work the teachers have set 'because they have to' rather than because they need to. ...it's not like i do it anyway, out of principle, and i'm doing fine.

homework is good it helps you study for future exams

I dont understand why teachers get homework. I mean children are in school for the most part of the day. Ontop of that they get homeowrk in my opions that just causes them stress and studies show stress can lead to people forgeting things so they can forget things that they learned in school. I belive homeowrk should not be giving out the children need to come home and relax and they need be active, we dont want our children to be un healthy and be sitting home all day doing homeowrk we want them to go outside and be active, but sometimes they cant because homework.
