Has anyone ever heard that at one time beavers were as big as bears?

Yes, they were, many thousands of years ago. Many animal's ancestors were once much larger than they are today. There was once a giant cat that was three times larger than a lion or tiger today. It could kill a mastodon (hairy elephant). It lived in North America.

Yes during the pleistocene era there were many mammals bigger than they are today. Like giant land sloths *shutter*
