As best I understand, it is a slushy or clicking sound in the heartbeat, caused by a valve not closing properly or a hole in the heart. I have two friends that have/had murmurs. One is caused by a mitralvalve prolapse. The other was caused by a hole in the heart between the chambers which has been surgically repaired. In the later case, the normal bypass past the lungs in a fetus that normally closes immediately after birth failed to close. http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/dci/Diseases/heartmurmur/hmurmur_what.html
