  • Okay, and I thought I had been watching too much Star Trek.
  • There is something to that. Seen objectively, we are not very nice. Everything I have ever read about the U.S. and alien technology or psychic abilities has to do with making weapons. There is a deep seated quest for power and control underneath the veneer of democracy. Most of the contact with aliens reported mentions psychic ability, which would mean that they pretty much know how we think. Even without psychic ability this would be pretty obvious. We wouldn't trust them, we would try to steal their technology and look for some way to exert control. What we wouldn't be is trustworthy. If I were them, I'd be waiting for the day when we could be trusted to behave ourselves.
  • For now, the speed of light is as fast as we can travel. I have my doubts. This being said, our nearest niebhors are over 100 light years away.
  • No, it is not logical. It means we are assuming that they even think in terms close to our own. It could be they have contacted us, but their form of communication is so far removed from our own, we have yet to realize it. Or they don't know we are here. Or, they simply have a hands off policy and can only watch us (which seems just as logical). Besides, if you believe in the UFO aduction stories, they don't seem very nice themselves. Gene Rodenberry, the creator of the Star Trek series once said that if humans were contacted by extraterrestrials, we wouldn't like to initial experience. Or something to that effect.
  • It is always illogical to make baseless assumptions on the thoughts of others.
  • How would a non-human gauge human maturity, esp. from 1000s or millions of lightyears away? And why would they care? When you discover another species, "maturity" is unlikely to be a major subject for investigation. You could say that chimps and dolphins act "immaturely" since both species are playful, with no boring work ethic (by human standards).   Could non-humans even detect differences in maturity among humans? Was Einstein mature? There are many possible answers to the Q. Examples: • The distance. If aliens 1000 lightyears away have been listening for electromagnetic signals from our direction, it will be another 800 years before they even begin to receive them. We've been emitting radio signals for less than 200 years. That means a listener 200 lightyears away would just now be hearing our earliest attempts to broadcast radio signals.   • What's in it for the aliens? Humans are dangerous. We shoot at anything that looks suspicious, and we're suspicious of everything. From a distance, aliens wouldn't know the extent of our destructive capabilities.   • Aliens might be in the habit of farming the animals they discover on other planets. They wouldn't make their presence known until after they've tasted us and developed some tasty recipes for human flesh. These aliens don't want humans with good taste. They want humans that taste good. To forestall the alien invasion as long as possible, we should eat horrible things that make us taste bad.
