  • If a murderer is put to death, he has no opportunity to kill some more. Plus, his/her death frees up prison space. I don't think death penalty is a deterrent in that I don't think anyone believes they'll get caught( & many don't get caught). On the other hand, I believe the 3-strikes law is a general deterrent because people believe they can end up in jail (permanently). Go figure.

  • Since that is the case the death penalty serves no earthy purpose and should be abolished in the states that currently have it on the books.
  • Not *only* but yes, I really do think that is the case for many offenders - and its a natural instinct to think "it won't happen to me", either that we think we will not be caught, think we won't be found guilty and so it is a calculated risk, or really don't care too much either way. We must not forget irrational crimes of passion, though too, which the above obviously does not apply.
