  • I'm not an expert but I think Matisse was a avant-garde. Which means that what he did, back then when he painted it was revolutionary. They had this very hard structure about how to paint and which colours and themes to use and then a couple of guys like Matisse brought up the light back to the paintings =) Just try to think of him back in his context.
  • It's certainly not his best work. I like everything about it but the seated figure which doesn't look like it belongs in the space it was painted. . Call it third-rate work from a first-rate artist, say.
  • It shows some skill but it looks very incomplete.
  • I like the use of color and perspective and line, but I can't say much for the overall effect. It almost seems incomplete. The first painting at that link, the one of the bay was very good.
  • i really didnt like anything about the picture, other than the arch with the mismatched paint job, but he cut it off. it could have been an interesting perspective ~ but the subjects in both the foreground and background were dull. the view out the window was depressing and the colors were drab. frankly all the paintings from that period in the early 1910s in this collection were boring. maybe he was going through a depression or something. i really like some of matisses work ~ but they are usually bolder in color and more interesting, abstract subject matter ~ i think it coincides with him living the good life on the french riviera. :)
