"Stick-in-the-mud" was first recorded in 1733 with its still current meaning: a person who is stolid (having or revealing little emotion or sensibility; not easily aroused or excited) and unimaginative, content with his lot and unprepared to make an effort to improve it.

a"fuddy duddy"...a person who gets no enjoyment out anything....has no "fun" sense ....
" My mom is a "stick in the mud." or bully's could use of a person who would refuse to join in on something that was "against the grain" for them,"ahhhh, she's a "stick in the mud."
some people really are dull ,no sense of adventure or interest in anything...but some aren't ...the phrase is used as a goading tactic...
i have had it laid on me a few times..just said ,"u call me a stick in the mud because i won't join your taunting her? no ,thanks , i'd rather be the stick than the MUD!!:)Justme

To me, (the expression aside,) it means "Treasured memories of childhood riverside play, paddle in hand as I twirl it deeper and deeper into the beach sand, creating a delightfully muddy, mostly watery mess where I could eventually place the river-captured guppies." Ahh, the memories...! :)

If you are coming up the Rowley River at night on an outgoing tide, and then lose the channel, you will find out what it means to stick in the mud.
