11 years is a good long life for a dogg and unfortunately the medication only relieves the symptoms, its not a cure.

For a dog of this size and breed 11 years old is not that unusual. He is getting on in years and he may just be getting too old to handle the meds. I would talk with your vet to see if there are alternatives. I'm sure you want him to be as comfortable as possible and have as happy a life as is left to him. Unfortunately, for a dog like this 14 or 15 years would probably be the maximum life expectancy. 12 years is probably closer to average. I really feel for you and hope it works out for the best for both of you.

Rimadyl, unfortunately, eats up the Liver. It's a standard medication used in typical Western Medicine. There are Homeopathic Remedies that can treat the hip dysplasia, without such side effects as the current course of medication you have her on. However, the challenge is in finding a Holistic Vet, or one who is both open minded and knowledgeable about these alternative treatments! The Synoquin should NOT be a problem, it's more supportive of healthy joints. The following Web site is a most excellent one for becoming better informed about this problem, and offers many different ways to attempt to cover your dog's health, both traditional, and alternative treatments are discussed...I strongly suggest you read it over before seeing your current Vet again. You have my prayer and good wishes in you decision making. http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=2&cat=1569&articleid=444 This site specifically addresses the use of Rimadyl with the older dog and dogs who DO NOT react well to this medication.... http://www.srdogs.com/Pages/rimadylfr.html
