I am staying in a residence with high speed internet via a Webstar cable modem. What do I need in order to use the wireless capability on my laptop? Does the device replace the modem or connect to it?

I'd ask the owners of the residence about their particular setup. Their Webstar modem may have wireless capability, so you'd just turn your computer on and connect to it automatically, or they may have a separate wireless modem and you'd do the same. OR you can bring a short internet cable with you and plug directly into their cable modem. In any case, every setup is unique so you have to ask.

I would get a wireless router and hook it up to my modem. I have a DSL "modem" that is connected to a wireless router. That router is hooked to two desktop systems via CAT5 cable *and* to my laptop via wifi. All three systems share the same DSL connection. Get a wireless router and hook it to your modem.
