I must recommend for you to try reading Edgar Rice Burroughs "John Carter or Mars" or "Princess of Mars" series. It has romance, action, adventure, valor, and friendship spun into the stories. The language is somewhat outdated but once you get past the style, the content is captivating.
If you can find them, the series by Julian May (The Saga of the Exiles) beginning with "The Many-Coloured Land. It's a good mix of science fiction and fantasy, and very well written. The first four books were great, but I can't vouch for the rest. Most series in this genre tend to taper off after the first couple of books, and I make it a policy never to read beyond the first few.
Darren Shan.
Reeshard and The Great parish Swamp is a new series that's absolutely wonderful reading for any serious fiction fan. This series is destined to be a bestseller in no time and hopefully make it to movie status. It's truly an emotional roller coaster of an adventure with time travel, alternate reality, magic and mayhem and a great array of characters one easily feels for. Based on a story actually told to the author's children and grandchildren it really reaches inside. it's just a super great read!
Try the Deryni series - reasonable fantasy, quasi-historical, not a mental challenge.
