They wanted to be in the Cool Kids Club. It's too bad that they didn't recognize that nukes are as far from cool as you can get.

To flex their muscles. To be relevant. To scare the piss out of Japan and South Korea. To test President Obama and thumb his nose at America. To show how great and advanced their country is. Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il have spent many years convincing the people of North Korea that the South Koreans, led by the imperialist Americans want to invade and finish the Korean War for good. The lives of the North Koreans is so bad, they actually *want* this war. This is all they have been taught. This is all they have been trained for. Money which could have been diverted to feed North Koreans has been spent on military preparations. The North Koreans feel it is their destiny to liberate the South from the United States and share their communist dream with them. It is a very tenuous situation over there.

WOW, Keith - you always ask the best questions.... Maybe N Korea is feeling a bit out of step with the rest of the world and wants to be a force to be reckoned with too. Unfortunately, that is a reflection of the old world order (where might makes right) - in my mind, the new "foreign relations" emphasis is to see each other as domestic partners rather than "foreign nations". So to me it is just an expression of the death throes of an old world order, similar to the 9-11 inspired ranting and ravings of a segment of the old world order that is clearly becoming increasingly irrelevant and doesnt know what else to do about it...

because the despot who runs the country knows that Nth Korea is screwed..its broke and thousands are dying of starvation, its his way of trying to blackmail the rest of the world to give him money and aid which has been denied before because of the corruption that is deeply embedded in his Government and the fact this fool won't talk to anyone.
