It started to develope into a commonly used term around the time "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" became popular.

A few years ago it started but only became part of common language about two years ago. Now however (supposedly) its being outdated and replaced by the term 'retrosexual' - a guy who doesn't use products on his face and hair and who goes more for comfort than style.

About two years ago. Applies to guys who like to spend time at the spa, exfoliate, manicures, pedicures, botox, etc. Since this is primarily a big city phenom, hence metro.
