Well, depends on the cut, height, and style of the neckline. Obviously, you want to be able to see the jewelry, but it also shouldn't clash with the neckline/top if it's a busy/ruffly thing. I'd advise making sure to make the necklace falls nicely on a clear expanse of the neck above the neckline of a scoop top, or hangs in intersting way in the case of chains over higher collar tops.
