Ancient Rome STRONGLY suggested that two, perhaps three at the most, children were sufficient. Additional children were either abandoned/exposed or worse. There's an excellent book on the subject, "The Kindness of Strangers" by John Boswell. It discusses in detail the historic and cultural aspects of child abandonment.
